Kim Woo Bin, 27, was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal cancer on May 24, Wednesday. The South Korean model and actor is set to star in the 2018 film “Wiretap” by Park Sang Dae.
“Kim Woo Bin recently noticed something abnormal about his body while he was in the midst of multiple schedules,” Kim’s agency Sidus HQ said in a statement obtained by Soompi. “When he went to the hospital to see what it was, he received a diagnosis for nasopharyngeal cancer.”
“Thankfully, they said it’s not too late to receive treatment, so he has started radiation therapy and is taking medication,” the agency continued. “He will
be focusing on treatment so that he can return with a healthier image. We are currently discussing his schedule due to his treatment. We ask for your support and encouragement.”Just recently, Kim finished his third “Spotlight” tour in Asia. He visited Japan, Macau, Taiwan and Thailand.
More than a month prior to the diagnosis, Kim was appointed as an Honorary Ambassador for the 2018 Winter Olympics, which will take place in South Korea ce. As promotional ambassador, the model and actor will promote the event by participating in several activities inside and outside his home country.
"I have always been interested in sports,” Chosun Ilbo quoted Kim as saying during his appointment on April 13 at the office of the Pyeongchang Organizing Committee. “With the Pyeongchang Olympics less than a year away, I will try my best to galvanize support for our
Olympic team."The 2018 Winter Olympics will run in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province for 17 days, which will start on Feb. 9, 2018. Prior to Kim, his “The Heirs” co-star Lee Min Ho, Major League baseball player Choo Shin-soo and Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na have been appointed as honorary ambassadors for the games, as well.
It was in 2013 when Kim rose to popularity. He was cast in the teen drama titled “The Heirs,” in which he was in the main cast opposite Lee and Park Shin Hye.
“The Heirs” was the first South Korean drama that was co-produced by South Korean production company Hwa and Dam Pictures and American digital distribution platform DramaFever.
After “The Heirs,” Lee had a hiatus from the drama series from 2014 to 2015. He made a comeback in 2016 when he starred in “The Legend of the Blue Sea” opposite Jun Ji Hyun.
